It is impossible to neatly label and codify the customs of the Navajos, now numbering more than a quarter-million people. Divergence is inevitable. As our interviews progressed, I began to write. But something was wrong. It wasn’t Chester; it was me. I’d finished Chester’s biography before I realized that his story wasn’t mine. It was his.
