The American documents handle the story of the early settlers from another perspective. In some measure, all make the history of Mexican Americans come alive. Weber has chosen his documents with the insight of the professional historian, yet his choices reveal a refreshing sympathy for the Spaniards and Mexicans and their conquered descendants. His anthology documents vividly the rich historical heritage of the Spanish-Mexican Southwest and the dimensions of the conflict between the native peoples and the invaders who followed the American conquest of the Southwest.

This brings us to another closely related question. To what extent is Mexican history Mexican American history? To some historians, especially those who specialize in Latin America, Mexican history Page 4 and Mexican American history are nearly synonomous. 11 That is an unfortunate but understandable point of view. Because most Mexican Americans have come to the United States since World War I, their heritage is linked almost completely to Mexico's past. Mexican history, then, is at least as essential to the understanding of Mexican American history as the history of England is to an understanding of United States history.

9 A study of history, then, may be as useful as sociology or the other social sciences in attempting to understand why Mexican Americans are a unique ethnic group for whom the mythical melting pot has not worked. But what is Mexican American history? First, when does it begin? 10 This view seems shortsighted: it is similar to arguing that United States history began in 1783 when the republic became officially independent of England. Just as we recognize that an understanding of our colonial heritage is vital to understanding our history as a nation, so too we need to understand that Mexicans living in the Southwest had a significant heritage before they were militarily conquered and became Mexican Americans.
