L'ATLAS

Jules Dedet Granel

WRITING · SIGN · GEOMETRY · ABSTRACTION

From the streets of Paris in the early 1990s to galleries, museum spaces, and monumental installations, L’Atlas has developed a language built on writing.

Its name becomes a sign, architecture, rhythm. The line structures space.

The solid responds to the void. Repetition creates movement. Through the works and shifts in scale, writing breaks free from reading to become form, movement, and abstraction.

BIOGRAPHIE

BIOGRAPHY

L’Atlas (Jules Dedet Granel, born in 1978 in Toulouse) creates work based on writing, geometry, and optical and gestural abstraction.

In 1990s Paris, he began exploring the structure of words and the construction of signs at a very early stage. After studying art history and archaeology, he deepened his practice of calligraphy and sigillography in Morocco, Egypt, Syria, China, and Japan under the guidance of great masters.

Supported by agnès b. since 2001, he has developed a unique visual vocabulary based on his pseudonym: abstract writing, methodical lines, rhythmic interplay, and a radical use of black and white. Ranging from intimate formats to monumental installations, his work spans calligraphy, geometric abstraction, minimalism, and optical art.

He calls this body of work “Calligraphic Abstraction.”

His works have been exhibited in numerous institutions in France and internationally. Today, he continues his artistic exploration centered on line, sign, and structure, and has founded the Galerie Liminal in Les Lilas.
